2 Kings Reflections

Here are some of the reflections that have been added to the board this month:

God cares about our cares and is sovereign over them (6:1-7)

I love how the miracles of Elisha show us God’s concern for desperate individuals in hopeless situations – the widow’s oil, the Shunammite’s son…

All the way back to 1 Samuel… the Lord is King!

It’s not easy reading about the killings of Jezebel and Ahab’s descendants. But if we know Jesus, there is comfort in remembering that God does keep his words of judgement. One day, King Jesus will bring a final end to all evil.

2 Kings 7:9 – This is a day of Good News. Let us go and tell…
Four lepers discovered salvation to a city in desperate straits. They knew it was wrong to keep this to themselves. We too have discovered salvation as God revealed His mercy to us. In the same way it is wrong to keep this to ourselves!

Hezekiah started well… but he didn’t finish well. What happened? He took his eyes off God and started looking at his own resources, and in doing so boasted in what he had. This is the essence of pride. If we are going to finish well, we need to cultivate the habit of not looking to our own resources, but looking to Him!

A 2 Kings comic by Reuben

Text reads:
1) It was a dark time where unfaithful kings ruled…
2) So God sent the prophets…
3) They foretold the destruction of both kingdoms
4) and true to their word, it did [happen]
5) First Israel… then Judah
6) The message is clear: Never Underestimate God.

Some questions

On Wednesday evenings, we have a Reading the Bible Together Question Box. Here are some of the questions that have been asked this month, which you might like to think about. We’ll discuss one or two of these at our end-of-month reflection times too.

  1. What are the parallels between Moses, Elijah/Elisha and Jesus? Why the miracles? (Raised people from the dead, healed lepers, parted waters, old lady has a baby)
  2. Why the physical acts in Elisha’s miracles? E.g. lying on the boy, throwing salt/sticks in water
  3. Does God really work everything together for our good? E.g. deaths, invasions, children being eaten
